Palo Santo (Spanish for Holy Wood) is the fragrant wood of the Bursera graveolens tree (the same family as Frankincense), which grows wild in Central & South America.

Its use an an incense dates from at least as early as the twelfth century, before the Inca era. It's traditionally used to clear bad energy, negative thoughts, misfortune, and evil spirits - similar to smudging with White Sage in North American tradition.
