Mike Abrahams – Founder and owner of Wild Oats

Mike trained as a space engineer and worked for several years at the European Space Agency in Noordwijk, Holland. Mike and Loes both craved a change though and wanted to be involved in something environmentally sound and sustainable. In 1981 they opened Wild Oats and it has gone from strength to strength. Mike is extremely knowledgeable as well as passionate about health and nutrition. He advises individuals on how to take individual responsibility for their health through making changes to their diet and lifestyle. Since 1981 Mike has been a regular teacher of natural healing, wholefoods and macrobiotic cookery both here and abroad.

Pam Buckle

I started working at Wild Oats in 1987, and apart from 4 years doing other things (John Lewis and Offshore Finance) have worked here ever since.  Do the maths!

I look after the Natural Remedies department. I have many years experience advising customers, have done lots of training, and I am also a Dr Hauschka skincare advisor. I try to practise what I preach, but I do firmly believe that chocolate is a vitamin.

I share my life with my partner and 2 Siamese cats. When not working I will be found gardening, birdwatching and generally enjoying the natural world, and knitting at every possible opportunity!

Sally Marshall

Hello, I’m Sally and I’m the groceries manager at Wild Oats. I started here on the shop floor back in 2001 when I was completing my reflexology training. The plan was to work part-time in Wild Oats whilst building my career as a Reflexologist. It is such a nice place to work though and my plans soon changed! I now work here full time and can usually be found working up in the office.

I’m passionate about living the sort of lifestyle which Wild Oats supports and am very happy to be working in this trade. I’m vegan, and a real foodie, so love that my job involves sourcing delicious and exciting new products.

Outside of work I love to sing and am involved in a number of projects including a chamber choir and a folk/indie band. I also play the French horn and trumpet in the band. I enjoy getting out into nature and am never happier than when hiking along a coastal path or sitting next to a woodland stream…ah!

Allie Burdet

I have worked for Mike and Loes since 1992, first running the wonderful gem that was Health Matters in Cotham Hill, and then as one of the managers in the ‘big shop’ – Wild Oats.

Over the years I have learned a great deal about supplements, herbs and skin stuff and have always tried to share that knowledge in as helpful a way as possible. I’ve trained up in every qualification going but still find experience (and Mike) the most valuable teacher.

Shaitsu, Holistic Massage, hand-made skincare products (and other alchemy) and Applied Neuroscience also feature in my work life, and a bit of work in the early days with Absolute Aromas, Yaoh and Pukka. Wild Oats is great like that – many of us fit in sabbaticals and professional training while still remaining a Woatie at heart.

Heather Stephens

I started working at Wild Oats when it existed as Health Matters, a small shop on Cotham Hill. I was only 16 back then, and the post was part of the government’s Youth Training Scheme. I loved working for Mike and Loes so much that I carried on to do my City & Guilds Retailing 1, 2 and 3. I’ve had four children since then, returning to Wild Oats in between each one! I feel so lucky to have two families.
I really enjoy spending time with my children, and I love camping, caravanning, wild swimming and dogs (German Shepherds and Jack Russells).
