Meet the maker: The Goodwash Company

The Goodwash Company make their shampoo bars by hand, in small batches, in Wales with only the finest, ethically sourced natural ingredients. The Goodwash Company is a certified social enterprise and they reinvest their profits back into the community, helping improve the lives of animals and people.

Why should you use shampoo bars?

80 billion plastic bottles that are disposed of are shampoo and conditioner bottles, and only 9% of plastic worldwide is recycled. Many soap bars are packaged in minimal packaging and can generally be recycled thanks to their eco-conscious creators!

Switching to shampoo and soap bars are better for our hair and skin. The nutritious ingredients of the bars work with the natural oils in our hair and skin that keep us healthy, instead of stripping them away. They are also more cost effective as the bars are more concentrated than liquid soaps, which means they last a lot longer.

Their small size makes them perfect for travelling too and their natural ingredients means shampoo bars can also be used as a body or hand wash, saving you space in your suitcase for more important things!

What advice have you got for someone switching from bottled shampoo to shampoo bars?

They have been really popular with our customers. They are zero waste and have no negative affect on our environment. They last a lot longer, much easier to pack and take with you on your travels in our drying soap pouches.

When you first start using shampoo bars, you might find that you struggle to get a good lather. Wet your hair first and then the shampoo bar, work the bar into your hands to lather it up then run it through your hair. Rinse and repeat for a thorough double wash.

How to properly use a shampoo bar

  1. Start by wetting your hair and the shampoo bar.
  2. Rub the shampoo bar between your hands to lather it up.
  3. Hold the shampoo bar to your head and lather it from your roots to your tips.
  4. Keep massaging the shampoo bar into your hair and scalp until all of your hair is covered in a shampoo foam.
  5. Rinse thoroughly and repeat if you feel like you need to.

How long can your shampoo bar last?

It always depends on how often you wash your hair - but on average we would say around 3 months.

What’s the best way to store shampoo bars?

It's important to keep your shampoo bar dry so it doesn't turn into a bar of mush, and most importantly so it lasts longer! Mandy recommends storing your shampoo bar in a soap pouch and hanging it somewhere so that it dries nicely.

You can also get a soap bar tray so that it doesn't stick to your shower and leave a mess.
