How to prevent maskne
Mask acne or ‘maskne’ is caused by wearing a face mask for prolonged periods of time. The constant friction between the mask and our skin traps oil, dirt and makeup which can clog our pores. And with the addition of the warm, moist environment it’s a utopia for bacteria.
Maskne is definitely manageable if you follow a good skincare routine.
Prevent maskne with these steps
Use an oil balancing cleanser
Start using an oil balancing cleanser every day, morning and night. A really nice one is the Sukin Natural Purifying Gel Cleanser. This cleanser balances the complexion and removes excess oils.
Use a clarifying toner after you cleanse
Toners especially for acne prone skin help balance oiliness and minimise blemishes. One of my favourites is the Dr Hauschka Clarifying Toner, as it is in a spray bottle it is refreshing on the skin, and can be easily sprayed on throughout the day for extra protection against blemishes.
Try a facial steam bath
Treat your skin to a facial steam bath once or twice a week. Steam baths can be extremely beneficial as they open pores, loosen blackheads and prepare your skin for a deep cleanse.
Add 2-3 drops of some essential oils such as rosemary or tea tree for their anti-bacterial properties. A ready-made product to add to your water is the Dr Hauschka Clarifying Steam Bath which opens the pores, soothes inflammation and reduces the appearance of blackheads.
Use a beauty mask
After the 5-10 minute steam, your pores are open and skin is softened, therefore it’s the perfect time for a face mask as it can easily penetrate the skin. A great mask for acne-prone skin is the Sukin Anti-Pollution Face Mask.
Exfoliate your skin
Start exfoliating a few times a week with a natural, gentle exfoliator. We don’t want to damage the skin so it’s best to limit this to a couple of times a week. This will ensure all excess skin cells trapped by the mask are lifted. A lovely one is the Sukin Rejuvenating Facial Scrub made with ground rosehip seeds to help with a clear complexion.
Change your face mask regularly
Finally, but most importantly, change your mask every day. Putting the same mask on each day means that you are building up the bacteria levels more and more each day. It’s like using the same cotton pad to wipe your makeup off over and over again, not a nice thought!
