What is a Healthy Diet?
To have a healthy diet you should try to:
- eat at least 5 portions of fruit and vegetables every day
- reduce your dairy consumption or use dairy alternatives (such as soya drinks)
- base meals on higher fibre foods containing starch like bread, rice/pasta or potatoes.
But when it comes to exploring the idea of a healthy diet, we’re posed with two notions:
- people who should know better don’t know what a healthy diet really is, and/or
- healthy diets no longer contain the nutrients they should.
Do Multivitamins Work?
My most easily recounted experience of this has been in the sales of a green foods multivit by Nature’s Plus, called Source of Life. The makers are so sure of this product that they guarantee a burst of energy or your money back. What the product does is provide a broad spectrum of easily absorbable nutrients in realistic quantities, which seems to rapidly fill those gaps in our personal nutrient stores which are causing dysfunction and tiredness. The result is that many people experience, to variable degrees, a lift or burst in energy within a day.
Very few pots have been returned over the years. I’m regularly getting customers coming back for more as they’re impressed at the results, and some refuse to believe the change was achieved by such a simple set of nutrients.
This product really is nothing magical though. It’s a logical solution to the poorly understood problem that we’re overfed and undernourished. Even those who believe they know what constitutes a balanced diet, very few realise that the food they eat hasn’t got the nutrients in it. Possibly even if it’s organic. I can see the flack coming in on that one, but see the second bullet first…
How Drugs Affect our Health
It’s no surprise that many of us don’t feel we’re firing on all four. And then we take all manner of boosters and lifters, like more sugar (and guess what happens then…) or drugs, all of which further depletes our nutrient resources and we end up weaker and more dependent on the drugs we pay so much for in so many ways.
And our immune system depends on nutrients for it to defend us against an ever-increasing armoury of parasites and pollution. So in the absence of nutrients, our immune system cannot function properly and lets in all and sundry, with all their attendant illnesses. So we resort to drugs. These are nice little money makers for the drugs companies because:
- They stop the natural healing process
- Hide the symptoms
- Fool us into thinking we have been healed, meanwhile allowing the disease to go deeper
- Give us lots of lovely side effects. And of course, there are more drugs, with more side-effects, and so-on. (Sounds familiar? You want to make money on shares? – buy into drugs – we’re too steeped in the system ever to see the joke.)
- We then excrete the drugs into our ecosystem where they then proceed to do untold damage to our environment.
How To Eat Healthy
So here’s the bottom line. We have an opportunity to take charge of our own health and stay healthy. One part of this is to choose only good real food and eat in good balance. In order to do this, our food must be natural and come from natural forms of agriculture.
For the time being, we can supplement that diet with those nutrients not present in our food. This is an individual thing, and something like Nature’s Plus Source of Life would provide the first clue that nutrients might be missing – if this does the job, it’s not unreasonable to assume that it has plugged a gap in our nutrient profile, and this gap should be investigated.
Meanwhile, we can demand better food. Supermarkets didn’t stock brown rice and organic vegetables out of a concern for our health – it was because we asked for them and they can profit from it. So if we continue to stay choosy, eventually we’ll have the choice.
