When should you start taking vitamin D, what does it do, and how do you choose a supplement?
These are questions we often hear at Wild Oats. As part of our autumn wellness series, Louis from NaturesPlus recently joined us in store to talk through the basics.
When should you start taking vitamin D?
Autumn is a good time to review your vitamin D routine. Between October and early March, we don’t make enough vitamin D from sunlight in the UK.
Some people may also need supplementation throughout the year, including those with darker skin or very little sun exposure.
What does vitamin D do in the body?
Vitamin D helps the body absorb and use calcium and phosphorus. It contributes to the maintenance of normal bones and teeth, normal muscle function and the normal function of the immune system.
What should you look for in a supplement?
Choose a reputable brand with clear ingredient and dosage information. Vitamin D supplements come in different strengths, so consider your individual needs and any vitamin D you already take in a multivitamin or another supplement.
Your dietary preferences matter too. If you follow a vegan diet, look for a product clearly labelled as suitable for vegans.
A format that fits your routine can also make taking it simpler, whether you prefer capsules, tablets, drops or a spray.
