Wild Oats Top Tips for a Plastic-Free July

Plastic Free July is a global movement inspiring people around the world to reduce their use of single-use plastics, whether that be at home, at work, and in their communities.

As Bristol’s oldest health food store, we at Wild Oats are proud to support this initiative and are always exploring new ways to tread more lightly on the planet.

What is Plastic Free July and the Plastic Free Movement?

Plastic has been part of our lives for over a century. However, its convenience comes at a cost. From overflowing landfills to ocean pollution, our planet has a serious plastic problem.

The Plastic Free movement was born out of a desire to change that, beginning with a grassroots campaign called Plastic Free July, which started in Australia. Since then, it has grown into a global initiative led by the Plastic Free Foundation, encouraging millions of people to take part each year.

The idea is simple: choose at least one single-use plastic item to swap for a more sustainable alternative. And stick with it for the whole month.

Why Go Plastic Free?

Plastic is cheap, versatile, and found in nearly everything we use. But there’s a catch: most plastics are made from fossil fuels and never fully break down. Instead, they fragment into microplastics that linger in our environment for centuries.

What’s more, around half of all plastic produced is designed for single use — meaning it’s made to be thrown away almost immediately. The result? A rapidly growing plastic crisis that's polluting our oceans, harming wildlife, and affecting our health.

Wild Oats Tips to Cut Single Use Plastics — This July & Beyond:

  • 1. Carry reusable shopping bags

Keep a reusable bag handy to avoid using single-use plastic bags when shopping.

  • 2. Ditch disposable water bottles

Invest in a reusable water bottle and refill it throughout the day.

  • Eco friendly refillable containers for bulk foods at Wild Oats

    3. Choose sustainable food storage

Invest in reusable food storage options like beeswax wraps, silicone food covers, or glass containers, instead of using plastic wrap or sandwich bags.

  • 4. Embrace refillable solutions

Seek out local shops that offer refill stations for household cleaning products, toiletries, and personal care items. Refilling
containers reduces the need for single-use plastic packaging.

  • 5. Choose loose produce

Opt for loose fruits and vegetables instead of pre-packaged options. Consider using reusable produce bags, or simply placing them directly in your shopping basket.

  • 6. Bring your own reusable utensils

Carry a set of reusable cutlery, including a metal straw, when buying takeaway food.

  • 7. Explore Plastic-Free toiletries

Switch to plastic-free alternatives for personal care items, such as shampoo bars, soap bars, bamboo toothbrushes, and plastic-free dental floss.

  • 8. Use sustainable coffee cups

Carry a reusable coffee cup to your favourite café, as disposable coffee cups are difficult to recycle.
