Wild Oats Top Tips for a Plastic-Free July

Plastic Free July is a global movement that encourages individuals, communities, and businesses to work towards reducing their consumption of single-use plastics.

As Bristol’s oldest health food store, here at Wild Oats, we are always looking for ways to make more sustainable choices.

What is Plastic Free July and the Plastic Free Movement?

Since mass-production of the material took off in the early 20th century, planet Earth has had a big plastic problem. The Plastic Free movement grew from the desire to do something about it, starting with Plastic Free July, which started in Australia.

Today, the Plastic Free Foundation invites everyone to join in July every year. The idea is to swap one single-use plastic for a more sustainable alternative for the month.

Why Plastic Free?

As a versatile, useful, and cheap material, plastic has found its way into almost everything. The issue is that petrochemical plastics (common synthetic plastics made from fossil fuels) never fully degrade. Around half of all plastic items produced are for single use. This means a very fast-growing build-up of it in the environment.

Wild Oats top tips to avoid single-use plastics this Plastic-Free July & beyond:

  • 1. Carry reusable shopping bags

Keep a reusable bag handy to avoid using single-use plastic bags when shopping.

  • 2. Ditch disposable water bottles

Invest in a reusable water bottle and refill it throughout the day.

  • Eco friendly refillable containers for bulk foods at Wild Oats

    3. Choose sustainable food storage

Invest in reusable food storage options like beeswax wraps, silicone food covers, or glass containers, instead of using plastic wrap or sandwich bags.

  • 4. Embrace refillable solutions

Seek out local shops that offer refill stations for household cleaning products, toiletries, and personal care items. Refilling
containers reduces the need for single-use plastic packaging.

  • 5. Choose loose produce

Opt for loose fruits and vegetables instead of pre-packaged options. Consider using reusable produce bags, or simply placing them directly in your shopping basket.

  • 6. Bring your own reusable utensils

Carry a set of reusable cutlery, including a metal straw, when buying takeaway food.

  • 7. Explore Plastic-Free toiletries

Switch to plastic-free alternatives for personal care items, such as shampoo bars, soap bars, bamboo toothbrushes, and plastic-free dental floss.

  • 8. Use sustainable coffee cups

Carry a reusable coffee cup to your favourite café, as disposable coffee cups are difficult to recycle.
